Musikenshus (Concert Hall)
Rick Shands, Architect
For many years, the university town of Uppsala
had deliberated over having a concert hall built.
Economics and its proximity to Stockholm often
spoke against it. This proposal, drawn up as a
PPP with one of Sweden's larger construction
companies, was to make use of a 1940s school,
no longer in use as a school but well-located on
the same street as the central train station, the
city hall and the Town Theater. The concert hall
itself is situated on what was the school yard. The
remainder of the school form offices, practice
rooms, a cafe, and the original small auditorium
became a recital hall.
