Rick Shands, Architect
Malta's Opera House from the 1880's was
essentially destroyed during World War 2. This
self-initiated proposal placed a new, modern, and
full-scale replacement just outside the City Gates
of the old town of Valetta. It is as much an urban
design element as an architectural design, acting
to form a 'place d'etoiles' urban space in front of
the City Gates as well as act as a connector to
a colonnaded street further down.
The building comprises a stone and glass-clad
opera house and a special glass-clad retail,
restaurant and office component.
